Retailers that have not adopted a strategic social media strategy that has as much weighing in their marketing budget as their traditional media spend, are at risk of not only losing marketshare but also staying alive as a business.
Your brand is alive in places you never knew existed.
With the introduction of the Internet and in particular social media, your brand is coming up in places that sometimes you would prefer for it not to be.
That is the nature of today’s marketing environment.
If I was to pick 3 things that you need to do as a small business to market your business today, I would say;
About 10 years ago, I was in New York for a holiday and by chance, I happened to be in town when there was an entrepreneurs event with Jack Welch.
I sat down with my friends who were also in business and watched Jack Welch talk about his story of how he changed GE and his philosophies on business.
1 Billion Users. Now that is a really big number. HUGE!
If you think about the fact that there are only 7 billion people reportedly on the planet, Facebook has a staggering 14% as friends.
In July 2010, they had half that. 500 million registered users to be precise. So, how in 26 months have they increased to double that size excluding China, because its banned there?
The newly public listed company has to make money and now they have 1 billion ways to make that happen. Imagine as a business if you had 1 billion people who “liked” you in your database?
Launching the company’s first branding video, Facebook really has a ‘skies the limit’ philosophy and so they should.
If we believe what we read, then the world is stuffed. Literally. More debt than the Great Depression and unemployment is at an all time high – what else could we possibly be doing to destroy our world.
Yet, there are people who don’t look down the barrel of pessimism and they continue on a path of global dominance and financial reward.
There is so much being written about why people and in particular women, are not married.
For us singles out there, while we may be the ones who buy the books, read the articles, watch the movies and absorb anything that will give us answers to why we haven’t gone down a traditional route – I am sure I can speak for most of us who draw in a deep sigh everytime we see a headline that remotely resembles where we are in life.
Every day I meet with male and female entrepreneurs. In some ways, I would love to use these meetings in a study about human gender based entrepreneurial behaviour because it continues to fascinate me the inherent differences between men and women entrepreneurs.
A few months ago, I was walking in the park. Seagulls were flying around above me. It was a weird place for them to be as the park is situated at least 10 kilometres from the ocean.
As I looked up, I decided to capture the moment.
The seagulls flew off and I began to think…
A wake up call for me wasn’t so dramatic. In fact it was something that I hold dear to my heart and appreciate more than the words that were written.
This morning I woke up to a good friend of mine who I had met 13 years prior through the Young Entrepeneurs Organisation sending me a text message. It actually woke me up which is highly unusual as normally I would have been up way before then.
Are you the Xmas Scrooge or do you bring joy to everyone around you?
Does going to work mean that you change hats and become a negative, overly opinionated, in-your-face style manager who nags your employees into being so afraid to communicate?
Do you conjure up ways to make others miserable without even knowing it?
Are you too pedantic about detail that you lose sight of the big picture?
